ForeverLM vs Mendeley

Mendeley is Elsevier's reference manager for storing, organizing, annotating, sharing, and citing academic papers. Its paid plans now add a Reading Assistant, cross-library questions, experiment comparison, and larger storage. ForeverLM also manages and chats with papers, but treats them as one part of a broader research and learning library.

Where Mendeley is better

  • Citation workflow. Mendeley Cite inserts references and bibliographies in Word.
  • Research discovery. Recommendations and Elsevier's scholarly ecosystem help find related work.
  • Generous free entry. The free reference manager includes 2 GB of storage and limited Reading Assistant questions.
  • Cross-platform academic workflow. Desktop, web, and browser tools support researchers outside the Apple ecosystem.
  • Collaboration. Research groups and shared material fit labs and course teams.

Where ForeverLM is more complete

  • Every research format belongs together. A paper can share a Project with interviews, lectures, articles, books, and meeting notes.
  • The library is not tied to a publisher cloud. Files and metadata remain local and in your private iCloud container.
  • AI choice is explicit. Select models per task or use an assistant subscription you already have through MCP.
  • Papers can be listened to. Narration, source chat, and reading stay attached to the same record.
  • Understanding is tracked. Schedule the paper, run a review, and keep the transcript and completion state.

Which should you choose?

Choose Mendeley if you want a cloud reference manager with Word citations, scholarly recommendations, collaboration, and Elsevier-connected research services.

Choose ForeverLM if citation formatting is secondary to reading, listening, connecting, discussing, and retaining the paper alongside everything else you learn.
